Mooncakes!
The Mid Autumn Festival is in full swing in Singapore and to celebrate it correctly you must eat a mooncake. All over Singapore I was spotting mooncake vendors. I was torn as to whether these pastry looking items would be delicious or not quite to my liking. They look delicious on the outside but hearing that they are filled with bean or lotus paste I became a bit hesitant to actually purchase one, but when one of Nate's local partners provided a box of mooncakes it was time to be daring.
The initial thought both Nate and I had of the mooncake is that it tasted like a fig newton. The lotus paste was the consistency of the filling in a fig newton. The Macadamia nuts added a nice little crunch factor and I was surprised that I actually found them to be rather tasty. As we continued to eat the mooncake we came to a yellow circular center. Unsure of what the yellow object was I decided to let Nate have a taste first and then I would give it a try. I was hoping for a sweet center, however there was nothing sweet about it and my curiosity got the best of me so I had to do some research to determine what this odd center was. I guess sometimes ignorance is bliss because I found out the circular yellow center is an egg yolk. We did eat a few more of the mooncakes, but I was quick to locate and remove the egg yolk. The last mooncake was quite different from the other three. It almost tasted like you were eating a Christmas tree. I have no idea what was actually in it, however it seemed as though they dumped multiple nuts with pine needle looking things in it. So in conclusion if you are venturing to try a mooncake go for the lotus paste with macadamia nut however hold the egg yolk.
